Garage Floors That Hold Up to Weber County Winters

Garage floor epoxy is the job we do most in Ogden. The garage takes more abuse than any other floor in the house. From late fall to spring, cars roll in with slush off I-15, US-89 and the county roads. The salt water drips, pools under the tires and works into the concrete. Then summer brings tires hot from the pavement. A properly installed epoxy system seals the slab against the first problem and resists the second.

What salt does to bare concrete

Concrete is full of tiny pores. Salt water fills them, and when the temperature drops below freezing the water expands. Ogden's January mean low is about 21°F, according to the NOAA normals cited on Wikipedia, so slabs near the garage door freeze and thaw many times a winter. Each cycle pries at the surface. The result is the flaking, pitting and white crust you see near the door of many older garages. UDOT spreads roughly 236,000 tons of salt a year statewide, according to ABC4, and some of it ends up on your garage floor.

Signs your garage floor is ready for a coating

  • Flaking or pitting near the door and under the tires
  • White rings where salty puddles have dried
  • Oil, coolant or transmission fluid stains that have soaked in
  • Dust that keeps coming back after you sweep
  • Old paint or a kit coating peeling in the tire paths
  • Cracks, broken joints or spots where water sits

Why prep is most of the job

When a garage coating peels, the problem is almost always the bond. Kits from the hardware store tell you to acid etch. Etching cleans the top of the slab but leaves weak, salt-damaged concrete and old sealers in place. We diamond grind the whole floor, edges included, until the concrete is open and sound. Then we vacuum, degrease, and fill cracks and spalls. If there is old paint or a failed coating, it comes off first. Only then does the base coat go down.

Picking a finish

Most Ogden garage floors get one of three looks. A full flake broadcast hides salt residue and dirt between washes and adds grip. A solid color with a light flake or an anti-slip additive looks cleaner and suits a workshop corner. Either one can be topped with polyaspartic, which HomeGuide rates as having excellent UV resistance, so the floor stays clear near a west-facing door. We bring samples to your estimate so you can see them in your own garage light.

Older detached garages and newer attached ones

Ogden has a lot of older housing. Census figures summarized by Point2Homes put the city's median year built at 1966. Detached garages behind older homes often have thinner slabs, more cracking and some slope toward the alley. Newer attached garages in West Haven, Pleasant View or Syracuse tend to be larger and flatter, but they still get a full load of salt every winter. We plan the prep around the garage you actually have.

Care through the year

In winter, squeegee meltwater out the door and rinse the floor every few weeks. Use a plastic shovel blade on the coated surface. In summer, a quick sweep and a damp mop keep it clean. Put a pad under the kickstand of a motorcycle and under jack stands. With that care, the floor stays easy to clean for years.

What This Covers

A garage floor epoxy job covers the full slab from the door threshold to the back wall.

Full-floor diamond grinding

The whole slab and its edges are ground to remove weak concrete, old sealers and salt contamination.

Crack, spall and joint repair

Damaged areas are filled so the finished floor is continuous and has no weak spots.

Base coat, color and topcoat

A 100% solids base, a flake or solid color layer, and a clear chemical-resistant topcoat.

Stem walls and steps

The coating can run up the concrete curb along the walls and over the steps into the house.

Old coating removal

Peeling paint or failed kit epoxy is ground off before anything new goes down.

Garage Floor Epoxy Questions

How much does garage floor epoxy cost in Ogden?

HomeGuide's national range for a two-car garage is $1,600 to $5,800 for epoxy and $2,000 to $6,900 for polyaspartic. Removing an old coating, repairing salt damage and adding a full flake broadcast move the price. You get a written number after we see the garage.

Is epoxy worth it for a Utah garage?

For a garage that takes road salt every winter, a bonded coating keeps brine out of the concrete and makes cleanup fast. It is not worth putting over a slab with an active water problem or a heaving section. We tell you if that is what we find.

Will an epoxy garage floor be slippery in winter?

A smooth, glossy floor can be slick when wet. Flake floors have built-in texture, and we can add an anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat on solid-color floors. Squeegeeing meltwater out also helps.

Why did my kit epoxy peel at the tire marks?

Usually the coating never bonded well. Acid etching leaves weak or contaminated concrete in place, and hot tires can then lift a thin film. Grinding and a thicker system fix the cause.
