Garage Floors for a Mountain Valley Winter
Huntsville gets a real winter, and that drives most of the epoxy flooring work we do in town. The 1991 to 2020 climate normals on Wikipedia put average snowfall at 82.4 inches a year, with 22.5 inches in January alone. January highs average 34.2°F and lows average 10.9°F. The record low is -37°F. A garage floor in the Ogden Valley lives with snow, meltwater and road salt for a long stretch of the year.
The cycle that wears out bare concrete
Snow packs into wheel wells on the drive up the canyon. Inside the garage it melts, runs to the low spots, and soaks into the slab. At night the garage cools down and the water in the surface can freeze. Repeat that through a long season and the top of the concrete starts to scale and pit. Salt in the meltwater speeds it up.
A sealed floor stops the water from getting in. The slush stays on top, and you push it out the door with a squeegee. We build Huntsville garages with that in mind:
- A 100% solids epoxy or polyaspartic base ground into open concrete
- Flake broadcast for texture underfoot when the floor is wet
- A chemical-resistant topcoat that holds up to brine sitting for days
- Attention to slope and the door threshold so water heads outside
A small town with history
Jefferson Hunt founded Huntsville in 1860, and it incorporated in 1924. The Shooting Star Saloon opened here in 1879. The town is small, with 573 residents at the 2020 census, and many houses are older or have been added onto over time. Older garages may have thin, patched or painted slabs. Newer homes and cabins built around the valley tend to have larger garages for trucks, sleds and ski gear.
Gear rooms, mudrooms and basements
In a valley built around winter recreation, the garage is also a gear room. Skis, boots, snowshoes and snowmobiles drip on the floor all season. Some owners extend the coating into a mudroom or a basement entry. Basement floor epoxy works there if the slab passes a moisture test. We check before we commit to a system.
Timing an install up here
Huntsville's cold season is long, and a coating needs the slab and air in a certain temperature range to cure. The valley's warm months are the easiest time to schedule. In colder months we check slab temperature on the day, may heat the space, and use faster-curing polyaspartic where it fits. If it is too cold, we move the date rather than risk the floor. Many valley owners book in late spring so the garage is sealed well before the first October storm.
Summer sun at altitude
July highs here average about 90°F. Garages with doors left open on summer afternoons get direct sun. Polyaspartic topcoats resist yellowing from UV better than standard epoxy, so they are a good fit for a garage that is open often. Lighter flake blends also stay cooler underfoot than dark solid colors.

Huntsville Questions
Is an epoxy floor slippery when snow melts on it?
A smooth, glossy floor can be. We add texture with a flake broadcast or a grit additive in the topcoat. That gives your boots grip on a wet floor and still lets you squeegee it clean.
Can you coat a garage in Huntsville in winter?
Sometimes. If the garage is heated or we can bring the slab up to temperature, a fast-curing polyaspartic system may work. We check the slab on the day and reschedule if it is too cold.
Will a snowmobile on a trailer damage the coating?
Carbide runners and studded tracks can scratch any floor. Most owners leave the sled on the trailer or use a mat or dolly. The coating itself handles the melted snow and fuel drips well.
